This blog was created as an addition to an “Acrylics Basics” workshop presented in New Jersey some years ago. Over a number of years, in conversations with visitors to my studio, I have found that many people had tried painting with acrylics and had been unhappy with the results or even gave up in frustration. This was often the result of the bewildering array of choices of acrylic materials and manufacturers. Other people had problems working with the paints because of their fast-drying characteristics and found the paints drying out on the palette or ruining brushes. What bothered me the most were those who didn’t have much money but felt they had to spend a lot to get started.
First I set up the workshop. Then the blog was conceived as a way to connect with more people and to teach some things that I have learned the hard way. A large part of the information I have to offer is based on mistakes I’ve made. It is also a way to pass on new information as I continue to study and experiment. I am basically self-taught with acrylics and I learn something every time I pick up a brush. Coming from a background in chemistry I have taken, over the last fifteen years, a systematic approach to the subject. If I can share some of that experience and get a new painter started every now and then I will be very happy.
